The human body is an incredible machine and supercomputer that is so intricate and well-balanced that it isn’t replicated anywhere else in the animal kingdom, and can’t be recreated by scientists. If you ever feel a bit low, or a little bit insignificant, remember how incredible it is that you exist on this planet, and how perfectly formed your body is for survival.
The jury is still out on this one, but it’s estimated that we can smell and recall anywhere between 10,000 and a trillion different scents. Scent is our strongest memory trigger, and one of our most powerful senses. Have you ever caught a whiff of somebody’s cologne as you walk down the street and immediately been thrown to a memory of a middle school teacher from well over a decade ago? Our internal scent libraries are incredible.
Ever wondered: how long can you survive without water? Well, when we are launched into a survival situation we are able to sustain ourselves for up to three or four days without taking in any water at all. Considering we are supposed to drink about half a gallon a day, our body has some exceptional survival instincts.
Our fingers are so sensitive to the touch that if they were the size of the Earth, we would be able to distinguish between the size of a house and the size of a car.
Our eyes are so sensitive to light that if the Earth were completely flat, at night we would be able to spot a candle’s light from a distance of up to 30 miles. That’s some pretty sharp eyesight we’ve got going on!
Humans only use a small percentage of our power on a day-to-day basis, as our body limits it to prevent damage to itself. When we are faced with life threatening adversity, we experience something called ‘ysterical strength which allows us to access all our power to save our own lives or the life of someone nearby.
In just one 24 hour period the blood in our body travels four times the width of the coast of the US. That’s 12,000 miles around our veins, feeding our organs, muscles, and brain. And our little heart tirelessly keeps it going.
If our brains were actually computers, it would be able to perform 38 thousand trillion operations a second. That’s 30 times stronger than the world’s strongest super computer!
And last but not least, because it’s such a cute fact – we are the only species to blush! So if you ever feel a little bit miserable or down on yourself, it’s all about positive thinking. Just remember just how incredible your body is, and what we can achieve in times of adversity.
